Our Dermatologists will be able to perform a top to toe (even looking under the soles of your feet and on top of your scalp) inspection of your skin to check for irregular lesions or changes in colour, size of shape of any existing moles. As a general rule you should be checking your moles regularly for these changes, while a persistent scab that refuses to go away, is sign that something could be amiss and you should visit a qualified Dermatologist. Ideally, a routine mole check should be carried out by a dermatologist once per year, particularly if you are of fair skin and are exposing that skin to summer sun.

The risk with a mole is that if it does change in form and you do not catch this change during a periodic check-up, that it could be a melanoma– the deadliest form of skin cancer. Signs that a change is occurring in a mole include an asymmetrical form, signs that the borders of the mole are irregular or blurred, a change in colour or that the diameter of the mole has changed or has become raised. If you notice any of your moles have changed in this way, you should book to see a dermatologist.

We do not recommend attending a high street clinic where a non-dermatologist takes images of your moles and sends them to a remote dermatologist for their expert opinion. A mole that becomes a melanoma and left untreated, could be life-threatening.
