What are Verrucas?
A verruca, while generally harmless, can cause discomfort when you walk, as they most often appear on the feet. They appear in many sizes and shapes and are most often caused by an infection. While they are benign, most people who experience verruca’s seek some type of removal treatment either for aesthetic reasons, or to ease the physical discomfort of living with them daily.
Treating Verrucas
Like warts, verrucae are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). The virus enters the skin via a cut, break or laceration which leads to lesions.
So, what is the difference between a verruca and a wart? A verruca is a type of wart, medically called a plantar wart. Plantar refers to the fact that verruca’s appear on the bottom of the foot (although they can appear, uncommonly, elsewhere, such as the hands). The appearance of a verruca is a white area of skin, often with a blood vessel (which looks like a black dot) at the centre. Unlike a lumpy wart, a verruca is flat on the surface. Verrucas are contagious through contact and most likely to spread when skin is damaged or wet. After contact with the virus, it can take months for a verruca to become visible.They can be unsightly and uncomfortable, especially if they are on a weight-bearing part of the sole of the foot. While at home products exist, it’s best to have verrucae treated by experienced medical professionals, that have access to the right medications for your specific skin type.
Cryotherapy is one of the most common methods of verruca removal and involves the application of extreme cold to the area to freeze the lesion.
